Be Cool and Comfortable

Apa coba maksud judul di atas yaaa?? Yang pasti, bukan iklan AC. This is about my thesis.

Tipikal Indonesia banget memang, sok-sok an mau pake singkatan gitu.

Saya nyaris jungkir balik, and I came up with this sentence:
The vision of local development in South Kalimantan is: "Creating People of South Kalimantan who are: Well-ordered, Cool, Comfortable, Excellent and Well-developed".
...
...
sungguh aneh ya? memang...

I KNOW. It sounds horribly ridiculous as it might be. But that's the best that I can do.

Christian : Cool and comfortable? Are you sure?

Saya: Yes. I know. It sounds...umm.. funny?

Christian: *ketawa (nyaris) ngakak*

Saya: And guess what? it's our VISION of DEVELOPMENT

Christian: to be cool and comfortable?

Saya: umm...Yes... whatever that means

Christian: so, does the government then plan to install air conditioner everywhere in the province?

Saya: Maybe if they have the budget, that's what they're going to do....

Christian: *ketawa lagi* Cool and comfortable....

Saya: Look, it's because, in Indonesian, the first letter of each words will form an acronym, a word in Indonesian, "tersenyum", which literally means:
...SMILE...
*saya merasa bodoh sekali waktu ngomong kata-kata terakhir*

Christian: oh really???

Saya: *mengangguk* So maybe they choose any words that pops out and fits into the acronym

Christian: okay, fair enough... I've seen the same thing happen in other places.. *tapi masih dengan tersenyum geli*

Saya: can we start to talk about the other part of this chapter, please???

Yak sodara sodara... Itulah visi pembangunan lokal:

Cool and Comfortable...

Another Lesson from Environmental Revolution Class: What Kind of Environmentalist Are You?

Oke, mungkin memang ada (terlalu) banyak reading material setiap minggunya. Maybe making a 5-sentence commentary for all of those reading every week is quite demanding *apalagi kalo minimal ada 6 reading material, and the shortest one is 14 pages*. Maybe, Priya can be quite intimidating when she asks your opinion and reflections about the readings in the class. Tapi, entah kenapa, saya selalu excited dengan mata kuliah Environmental Revolution. Because I learn TONS of new interesting things every week. Not just from the readings, but also from the discussion that we have in the class. Sebelumnya saya tidak pernah tahu bahwa Darwin was such a Malthusian person, atau bahwa Mephisto can be a symbol of capitalism, or that Wallace once had this MAD idea about environmental determinism *selama ini yang saya tahu dari Wallace adalah dia orang yang bikin garis-garis flora-fauna di Sulawesi itu kan?*.

The structure of the class is also quite different. Biasanya sih we spend first half of the class discussing about the ideas in the readings. We had some interesting activities. We created stories, we had debates, we developed scenarios…
Jadi ingat waktu kuliah semester pertama dulu, waktu kita belajar bahwa environmentalism come in a spectrum. Ada yang deep-green environmentalism yang radikal at one point of the spectrum, and at the other end of the spectrum is shallow-green environmentalism. Dalam kuliah minggu ini, we expand the categories.

A little reflection, apa sih yang muncul di benak kita kalau mendengar kata environmentalist? Pecinta alam? Frankly speaking, saya dulu akan mengasosiasikan pecinta alam dengan sekelompok mahasiswa yang hobi kemping dan mendaki gunung, para pendemo yang suka berteriak “Selamatkan lingkungan kita!”, you know ..those kind of people. Then, I learned that almost all people are actually environmentalists, in one way or another. In that “green” spectrum of environmentalist, maybe I would put my self somewhere in between. But then, there are some other categories of environmentalist. And people came up with interesting ideas and labels. We had humanistic environmentalist, spiritualistic environmentalist, neon-green environmentalist, economic-realistic environmentalist (I kinda like this one, actually J). Me? Saya dan satu orang teman lain, Donna, we put ourselves as “occasional environmentalist”. Because, honestly, not all environmental issues are THAT interesting to me. I mean, seriously, di saat Indonesia masih menghadapi bencana alam semacam banjir dan longsor yang menelan banyak korban, do you still want me to REALLY care about the issue of whaling somewhere in Norway? Dan I have an impression, that actually, this is a more realistic one. People tend to care only on the issue that directly influences them. Including environmental issues. Take Singapore for example. Saya yakin Singapur mah bodo amat sama kondisi hutan kita, pas kebakaran hutan tahun 99 dulu waktu asapnya nyampe ke mereka, baru mereka mulai ribut… See?
Anyway, it’s another interesting lesson that I got from this class. That people can be environmentalist as they want it to be. It's not as hard as it seems. Ga perlu pake acara kemping segala, atau jadi anggota Greenpeace, or hug the trees. Just take a look around us, and try to realize how close we are with the nature. Open your mind, that we are not apart form the nature, indeed, we are actually a part of nature.

Can you feel it? Are you an environmentalist? What kind of environmentalist are you?

A Short Conversation on Friday

And last Friday, this is a conversation that we had before the "real" discussion and consultation started...

Spv : So, Utami, how are you?

Me : Well, not bad...

Spv : Good... Glad to hear that

Me : But not so good either..

*secara aku baru saja group meeting untuk presentasi Environmental Revolution, dan setelah konsul dengan supervisorku, kelompok kami bakal konsultasi dengan Priya untuk presentasi kami itu, believe me, consultation with 2 lecturers about different topics in ONE day dengan selisih waktu setengah jam, it is a little bit too much untuk otak saya yang apa adanya ini*

Spv : Really? That's too bad...

Me : Well, that's life. And I don't want to complain.

Spv : *sambil tertawa*. Yeah, you're right. There are days when I feel like I want to complain all the time. But I try not to do it so often. After all, complaining is not the best approach in life anyway

You know what? He's right. So I'll try my best for not complaining as complaining is definetely not the best approach in life after all...

My Trouble with the Machine

Blame my essay and minor thesis for that. Pertama, kalo beli pake vending machine itu, saya ga usah keluar dari perpus (which would take me around 5-10 minutes). Kedua, it's cheaper.

Tapi saya jadi kaget.

Oh My God Oh My God Oh My God Oh My God Oh My God... It was such a MESS. Kebayang aja apa yang terjadi kalo kita membuat kopi TANPA gelas/cangkir/mug. That was exactly what happened with that d*mn vending machine!

Gee... Tuhan, inikah caraMu menyuruhku insap supaya ga kebanyakan minum kopi lagi???

Labelling

That kind of picture sempet jadi trend di Facebook. Depends on the way we see them. Ada yang kita anggap sebagai penghibur, the other person we’ll consider as the drama queen, the other one goes as the wise one where we will turn to when we need advice, we put a label on someone who cheers the atmosphere as the clown in the crowd. That kind of characters. And it’s true. Jati dirinya.

But sometimes, it just dangerous to put label on someone. That the person IS the label. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s dangerous for us who put the label, it;s dangerous for the person being labelled.

Mungkin kita tidak sadar, tapi kita lalu tidak pernah menganggap serius orang yang kita anggap sebagai “a clown in the crowd”. We just don’t take them seriously. We don’t want to. Because the person supposed to be a clown, and who would take a clown seriously?

Speaking with a personal experience, saya mengakui, saya juga cenderung “melabeli” orang. I was like, “huh? Beneran nih itu dia?”.

Saya sendiri juga merasa that I am beinglabelled. I don’t want to complain, maybe it’s myself who create the label for me. I got more tasks to do than the others. Kalau ada apa-apa, orang cenderung dengan santainya “biar Utami aja...”, “suruh Utami aja...”, “biasanya Utami mau aja kok...”. Okay, on one side, I can take that as a compliment. That people recognize me for something good. And I feel just soooo tired to be “a good employee”.

Oh, and to make it a balance, I don’t just get a positive label. Surely, a, oh, okay, some negative things also somehow being labelled to me. Ekstrimnya nih, “silly” is also one of it. Well, sometimes it’s fun to be a clown in the crowd. I don’t mind if people laughed at me, as I always make silly mistakes, lots of time. But the not-so-nice-thing about it is, sometimes people don’t take me seriously. Seringkali, apa yang aku katakan, ga dianggep. Because for them, I don’t suppose to be right. I don’t have the right.

And it hurts.

The feeling that, what I say is not important enough to be considered. The feeling that most of the things that I do is improper, is wrong, that they can do it better than me.

Pernah baca serial Percy Jackson and The Olympians? Disana ada istilah The Mist, a kind of magic yang menghalangi manusia biasa melihat apa yang sebenarnya terjadi pada non-mortal, heroes, and monsters in the story. Mungkin, that's the way stigma and label work. By creating The Mist, that prevent us to see someone as they are. And it prevent us to see, that someone can be better than what we think they are...

Wish that I could make The Mist around me disappear, so people can see me as the way I am...
